Mary Ruane is the founding and former director of the UCD Applied Language Centre and is currently attached to the School of Asian Studies and the Confucius Institute University College Cork (UCC). Her interest in Chinese language and culture is long standing, and she has worked to promote the study of both in Ireland for many years.

Her work forms part of an overall national strategy to promote Sino-Irish relations in the fields of culture, education and business.  She is a former Chair of the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival and is currently a council member with the Ireland China Business Association.

She is the author of Access to Foreign Languages in Second-level Schools (1990) and is a Board Member of the Ireland China Institute.
